The holiday cottages are set in the village of Rhyd Ddu at the foot of Snowdon (often called Mount Snowdon) in the Snowdonia National Park. Rhyd Ddu is 9 miles from the walled town of Caernarfon with its famous castle, and 3.5 miles from the picturesque village of Beddgelert.

Wales is famous for its castles, and impressive Caernarfon Castle is nearby and well worth a visit. There are also castles at Criccieth, Beaumaris, Harlech and Conwy within easy reach.

The Welsh Highland Railway that runs close to the cottages operates from Caernarfon to Porthmadog via Beddgelert. There is a station in Rhyd Ddu so you can go on the train without having to use your car. The Snowdon Mountain Railway, runs to the peak of Snowdon from Llanberis, and on a clear day you can see the trains at the peak of Snowdon from the cottages, The Ffestiniog Railway runs from Blaenau Ffestiniog down to Porthmadog were it connects with the Welsh Highland Railway. There is also the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in Porthmadog.

There are numerous other tourist attractions in this part of North Wales that you can visit during your stay, including the Italianate village of Portmerion. See the attractions map above for more information about local attractions.

There are many activities that can be enjoyed from the holiday cottages including walking. The Rhyd Ddu Snowdon path starts outside the door, the Nantlle Ridge and other great climbs start from the village without you needing to use your car. If you finish your walk on the other side of Snowdon then a regular Summer bus service (Snowdon Sherpa) will drop you back at the door of the cottages.

There are mountain bike trails through Beddgelert Forest, and mountain bike hire is available in the village in Beddgelert. There is a new scenic path/bike route through the forest from Rhyd Ddu to Beddgelert. Bird watching, fishing, watersports and golfing are also catered for in the area - and for adrenaline junkies the longest and fastest zipline in Europe at Bethesda (Zip World Velocity) is a short drive away, and Zip World Titan, Zip World Fforest, Bounce Below and Surf Snowdonia are also within easy reach. Motorsport fans can have a go or watch a race at the Anglesey Circuit.

Snowdonia is a base for many Triathlons and other adventure races some of which pass the door including the Snowdon Marathon. See the Run Wales website for information on local running events. Climbing and watersports guiding is available locally at Bach Ventures.

The award winning beach of Dinas Dinlle is just 9 miles from the cottages, giving you the choice of beach or mountains.

  • 6th June - Beer Festival, Welsh Highland Railway
  • 18th July - International Snowdon Race - Up to the top and back in 1 hr !

  • 10th Oct - Ffestiniog Railway Victorian weekend
  • 24th Oct - Snowdon Marathon
  • 29th Oct - Wales Rally GB - World Rally Championship

Rhyd Ddu village consists of a handful of houses, and a pub and cafe both serving good food, surrounded by the mountains of the Snowdonia National Park. There are small village shops in Beddgelert, and Caernarfon has a large selection of shops including supermarkets.
